“you built a what?”

March 30, 2009

First question: What is a Teardrop Trailer?

“Teardrop trailers are camping trailers that were popular from the ’30s to the ’50s.  They typically sleep two inside, and have a galley under a rear hatch.  From there, the possibilities are endless.  Thousands of home builders and a dozen commercial builders have come up with a myriad of modifications and customizations.  Fat fenders, skinny fenders, pop-up roofs, walk-in kitchens, windows, doors, you name it.  There can be fifty teardrops at a gathering, and no two are alike.” — Kuffel Creek

Next question: Where did you get the plans?

I started with the Kuffel Creek “8 foot Cubby” plans, the tremendous support of the Teardrops and Tiny Travel Trailers message board, and not a clue of what I was getting myself into.

Here’s the photos of the teardrop trailer build.

Then: What on earth made you want to build one?

Waking up in a puddle one too many times. Slugs. Waiting for a dry spell to set up the tent so it can dry. Thunderstorms.

No, really: what made you want to build one?

The challenge. Wanted to see if I could. Slugs. Really, those little buggers fell in love with our tent, I have no idea why, but there’s only so many of them you can deal with at once.
